Limon, Costa Rica

Through SWISE, in collaboration with Robótica Limón, we created the program “Girls Can Be Engineers Too”, an initiative designed to promote female inclusion in STEM within Limón, a coastal region of Costa Rica where deeply rooted gender roles and socioeconomic limitations often restrict educational and professional opportunities. The program was directed at girls between the ages of 12 and 16 from public schools, providing them with hands-on robotics education and technical training.

As a result of this initiative, a robotics team emerged from the program and went on to participate in and win multiple robotics competitions, demonstrating both technical excellence and the transformative power of access to education. This project aligned closely with SWISE’s mission to increase female representation in STEAM fields, while also supporting Robótica Limón’s goal of expanding horizons within the community—one girl at a time. By combining technical education with mentorship and representation, the program helped challenge stereotypes and empower young women to envision themselves as future engineers and innovators.
